Al Stewart: Kim's Corner

September 7

With your photographs of Kitty Hawk

And the biplanes on your wall

You were always Amy Johnson

From the time that you were small.

Amy Johnson is not as well known in the US as she is in the UK, but the 1930s was an amazing time for women in aviation.  To really understand the kind of adventurous spirit Al is talking about in "Flying Sorcery" a fan really should read up on women like Amy Johnson, Amelia Earhart and Beryl Markham.  I would highly recommend Beryl Markham's "West With The Night", which Ernest  Hemmingway praised as  "a bloody wonderful book".
